Artificial hymen is a fake hymen that is created to look whole again. Artificial hymen is made of gelatin which contains artificial blood. So that during sexual intercourse, the blood red liquid will burst and flow like blood.
The production of artificial hymen has drawn much controversy. In some countries, the notion of virginity is still defined by the hymen intact when first having sex. Yet according to medical science, not all women have an intact hymen and not all hymen bleed when having sex for the first time. In addition to artificial hymen, there are surgical techniques that aim to restore the integrity of the hymen. This surgical technique is known as hymenorrhaphy.
Hymenorrhaphy, Hymen Return Surgery
Hymenorrhaphy or also commonly called hymenoplasty is a surgery to restore the hymen so that its shape is intact. Hymenorrhaphy is included in the category of cosmetic plastic surgery, female genitalia (vagina), or aesthetic gynecological surgery.
Hymen surgery is done by sewing back the remaining hymen that has been torn or damaged. Generally, the doctor will provide local anesthesia before hymenorrhaphy is performed. After anesthesia, the doctor will sew the inner and outer layers of the hymen so that the membrane from the back is similar to the original hymen. After the surgery, the hymen will be cleaned with warm water and the antibiotic ointment will be given on the suture line.
Is Hymenorrhaphy Safe?
Viewed from the medical side itself, the procedure for installing artificial hymen and hymenorrhaphy actually has no clinical indication, and is more aesthetic or personal needs. Until now there is not enough research evidence as a basis for evaluating the safety and complication rates of these actions.
Likewise, studies on long-term satisfaction for women who have undergone this procedure. That might be because this procedure is still illegal and is condemned by the people in several countries. Some of the studies available today are more about the actions of hymenorrhaphy in terms of ethics and norms that apply.
Therefore, patients should receive education in advance about the lack of data that supports the safety of hymenorrhaphy and possible complications that can occur. Complications in question can be in the form of scar tissue (scars), vaginal pain during intercourse, infection and tissue adhesion due to the former operation.
Hymenorrhaphy or hymenoplasty can indeed be another option than using artificial hymen. However, various aspects need to be reconsidered, including the medical, psychological, ethical, and norms before applying this procedure. Consult further with your doctor before undergoing the procedure, and make sure you do not do it in any place without the supervision of a doctor who has competence for this action.
